Meet Sylvain Bruni

A Life of Service

Sylvain Bruni believes local government succeeds when it listens, plans ahead, and earns the trust of the people it serves.

He lives on Buffalo Mountain in Johnson City with his husband, Dr. Michael Fowler, their son Henry, and their four rescue cats. After fostering Henry, they proudly welcomed him into their family through adoption. That experience strengthened Sylvain’s commitment to creating a city where every family can build a safe, stable, and hopeful future.

Originally from rural France, Sylvain came to the United States in 2003 to earn a master’s degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT. While there, he served in student government and was elected President of the MIT Graduate Student Council. He also began fifteen years of volunteer leadership with Boston Pride, including five years as board president. In 2018, he proudly became a United States citizen.

Engineering Solutions

Sylvain has spent over two decades solving difficult problems that affect people’s lives.

He serves as a Senior Principal Engineer and Division Director at a research and development company, where he leads teams developing advanced technologies for national defense. He is also the Founding CTO of a new spin-out venture focusing on senior health. His work requires bringing together experts from different fields, building consensus, and turning innovative ideas into practical solutions.

Those same skills shape his approach to public service. He believes local government should rely on facts, long-term planning, and meaningful public engagement rather than reacting to problems after they arise.

Serving Johnson City

Since moving to Northeast Tennessee in 2017, Sylvain has devoted thousands of volunteer hours to strengthening the community.

He serves as Chair of the Washington County Democratic Party while working across political and neighborhood lines on issues that affect everyone. He believes good ideas deserve support regardless of where they come from.

Sylvain helped organize the “No Bitcoin in Johnson City coalition,” bringing together residents, neighborhood leaders, business owners, and technical experts to advocate for responsible policies against cryptocurrency mining and large-scale data centers. He also serves as a community representative on Johnson City’s Noise and Vibration Study Committee. His work has helped expand public engagement, encourage independent research, and improve transparency around major development decisions.

Whether speaking at City Commission meetings, organizing community forums, or meeting with neighbors, Sylvain believes residents should help shape decisions before they become final.

Why I’m Running

Sylvain is running for the Johnson City Commission because he believes growth should improve the lives of the people who already call Johnson City home.

His campaign focuses on three priorities: making Johnson City more affordable, protecting neighborhoods while supporting responsible growth, and rebuilding trust through transparent and accountable local government.

He believes Johnson City can welcome new opportunities while preserving the qualities that make the city special. Strong leadership listens first, works collaboratively, and leaves the community better for the next generation.

More than choosing commissioners, this election is about choosing the kind of city we want to build together.
